For the largest energy delivery company in Texas with more than 141,000 miles of transmission and distribution lines serving more than 400 communities, we transformed their Summary Plan Descriptions (SPDs) from dense legal documents into on-brand, audience-specific resources built for real people.
Challenge
Health & Welfare SPDs running 130-144 pages aren’t light reading. The challenge: make them legally sound and genuinely useful for three distinct audiences — active employees, retirees, and shared retirees — while connecting them to the company’s broader benefits brand.
Solution
We built three audience-specific SPDs with a unified design system, landscape formatting for easy onscreen reading, and interactive navigation so users can find what they need fast. Each version is tailored to its audience while maintaining a consistent look and feel across the full benefits ecosystem.
Result
What started as bare-bones compliance documents are now communications resources employees and retirees actually turn to. Partial annual updates keep content current, and every five years a full redesign is printed and mailed directly to retirees. Over more than a decade, we’ve helped evolve these documents from a legal obligation into a trusted touchpoint – one that reflects the organization’s genuine commitment to its people.
